Information technology is that branch of science which :

 IT department handles many different functions and plays a critical role in keeping things running. It refers to anything related to computing technology, such as networking, hardware, software, the Internet, or the people that work with these technologies. While IT is often used to describe computers and computer networks, Andrey Prokopchuk, head of IT at Belitsoft, says the perfect IT department is the one you aren’t even aware of .This means that they are able to automate and create processes for many of their daily tasks, so that the business continues to run smoothly. IT is short for Information Technology and is pronounced as separate letters. The most basic information technology definition is that application of technology which solve business or organizational problems on a broad scale. Information technology is the broad subject concerned with all aspects of managing and processing information, especially within a large organization or company. IT is generally not used in reference to personal or home computing and networking.

There are three primary pillars of responsibility for an IT department:

IT Governance :

    IT governance provides a structure for aligning IT strategy with business strategy. The need for formal corporate and IT governance practices across U.S. organizations was fueled by the enactment of laws and regulations, including the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act (GLBA) and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, in the 1990 and early 2000s that resulted from the fallout from several high-profile corporate fraud and deception cases.

IT Operations :

   Information Technology Operations, or IT operations, are the set of all processes and services that are both provisioned by an IT staff to their internal or external clients and used by themselves, to run themselves as a business.

Hardware and Infrastructure :

   This focus area refers to all the physical components of IT infrastructure.
